Where to be picked up in Kotor

Kotor's walled town is pedestrian. From MonteGO rides on this route the usual pickup points are the Sea Gate by the port, the River Gate by the market, the Riva, Kamelija shopping centre on the road north, and Kotor bus station. On a cruise day the Sea Gate side is crowded; the River Gate is on the Perast side of town anyway and the easiest place for a car to stop.

The bay road from Kotor to Perast

The taxi leaves Kotor northwards along the shore road through Dobrota, a single line of stone captains' houses with the water on the left, then past Ljuta and the small beach at Orahovac, and on round the shore with Perast's church tower appearing ahead and the two islets in the water beside it. It is one of the loveliest short drives in the country and the road is right on the water for most of it.

It is also narrow and, in July and August, slow: there is nowhere to pass along Dobrota and traffic to Perast builds from mid-morning. Going early or in the late afternoon avoids most of it. The road continues beyond Perast to Risan, Morinj and eventually Herceg Novi, so Perast can be the first stop of a longer bay day.

Where taxis stop at Perast

Perast's waterfront is closed to cars in season. From MonteGO rides:

• The Perast entrance by the boats

  The main road runs above the town; the taxi drops you at the entrance where a lane leads down to the waterfront and the boats to Our Lady of the Rocks. Say 'Perast, the boats'.

• Heritage Grand Perast Hotel

  The hotel in the restored palace on the waterfront. Guests are dropped at the nearest point and the hotel arranges the last metres; give the name.

• Perast beach

  The small beach at the northern end of the waterfront. The taxi stops on the road above.

• Obala Kapetana Marka Martinovića

  The waterfront promenade itself, for restaurants and apartments; the driver drops you at the nearest access lane.

Making the most of it

Perast is small: the waterfront, the museum in the Bujović palace, a church or two, the boat to the islet and lunch. Two or three hours is plenty. Morning light is on the islets; late afternoon is golden on the town. For the return, book in the app when you are ready; drivers are along the bay all day. If you want to continue to Risan's Roman mosaics or all the way round to Herceg Novi, say so in the chat and the driver can take you on rather than back.

Bus, boat or taxi

The local bus along the bay road stops at Perast and is cheap, but it leaves from Kotor bus station, fills in summer and can be slow in the Dobrota traffic. Boat tours from Kotor's port go to the islet and often stop at Perast, a lovely option if you want the water; a taxi gives you your own timing and the drive along the shore. A rental car is a poor choice, since Perast has a small car park above the town that fills early.
