How do I get to Ada Bojana?

The island, the bridge and where cars stop
Ada Bojana is formed by the two arms of the Bojana river and the sea, and it is reached by one bridge from the mainland end of Velika plaža. On the sea side is the beach and the naturist resort, which occupies a large part of the island and controls access to its section; on the river side, a lane runs past fish restaurants built on stilts over the water, which are the reason many people come. Ulcinj is the base, and the ride is straightforward: out of town, past the turning for the long beach, and south along the road that runs behind Velika plaža with the kite-surf schools and beach bars on one side. From Bar, Podgorica and the airport
From Bar the road follows the coast south through Ulcinj; from Podgorica and its airport it comes down the plain and over the hills to Ulcinj and on to the island. Both are day trips, and for a day that ends with dinner on the river the sensible arrangement is one offer for the whole excursion with a driver who waits, or a scheduled return. Guests flying into Podgorica for a holiday at Ada Bojana or Velika plaža book the transfer the same way as any airport ride, with the resort or hotel as the destination.
Season, wind and the river
The beach is at its best from June to September, and the afternoon wind that makes Velika plaža a kite-surfing coast reaches the island too; mornings are calmer. The restaurants on the river open through the season and fill on summer evenings, so a reservation for the good tables over the water is worth making. Outside the season the island is quiet, some restaurants close, and the ride is quick from Ulcinj; the return still needs arranging.
Other ways to reach Ada Bojana
Honest comparison. In summer a local minibus runs from Ulcinj along Velika plaža towards the island on an irregular timetable; fine for the beach in daytime if you are flexible. There is no bus after dark. Driving yourself is easy and parking at the bridge exists, though it fills on August weekends. For a dinner on the river or a day trip from Bar or Podgorica, a taxi with the return settled is the simplest answer to the one real problem, getting back.
