Budva to Sveti Stefan by taxi

The fortified islet joined to the shore by a causeway is the most photographed place in Montenegro, and it is a short ride down the coast from Budva. A taxi gets you to the viewpoint on the road above, down to the beach and the causeway, or to Miločer's park and the hotels either side. Here is how the MonteGO ride works and where exactly to ask to be dropped.

3 steps

How to book this ride

1

Book from the Old Town edge or your hotel

Pickup: the Mediteranska bus stop, Slovenska obala, your hotel or the bus station. Destination: Sveti Stefan viewpoint, beach or a hotel name.

2

Step out when the car is close

The app shows the plate and arrival; be at the road on a summer day.

3

Down the coast to the islet

Through Bečići, Rafailovići and Pržno, then the descent to Sveti Stefan. Pay on arrival.

Where to be picked up in Budva

Budva's Old Town and promenade are car-free. From MonteGO rides on this route the usual pickup points are the bus stop on Mediteranska by the walls, Slovenska obala behind the beach, the seafront hotels' forecourts, Perla and the restaurants along the front, and Budva bus station. Put the spot in the booking and be at the road when the app shows the car close.

The coast road to Sveti Stefan

The taxi leaves Budva along the coast road, passes through the tunnel to Bečići, continues past Rafailovići and climbs over the headland to Pržno, a small bay with a beach and restaurants, then Miločer with its park and the old royal villa. Just beyond, the road rounds a bend and the islet appears below, the picture everyone has seen: red roofs on a rock, the causeway, two beaches either side. The viewpoint is on this road.

In summer the road is busy and the viewpoint lay-by fills with cars; a taxi drops you and goes, which is the whole advantage. The descent to the beach and the causeway is a steep side road down from the main road.

Where taxis stop at Sveti Stefan

From MonteGO rides, in the order most people ask for them:

  • Sveti Stefan viewpoint

The lay-by on the main road above the islet with the classic view. Say 'viewpoint' and the driver stops there; from it a path leads down to the beach.

  • The beach and the causeway

Down the side road to the car park by the water. The public beach is on the left of the causeway; the right side is for hotel guests.

  • Miločer park and Kraljičina plaža

The old royal park and the small beach next to it, a short walk north of the causeway. Ask for Miločer.

  • Maestral Resort & Casino

In Pržno bay just before Sveti Stefan, with a forecourt. Give the name.

  • Hotel Kingstone and Slobode street

The village above the islet, where the apartments and small hotels are. Give the name or the street.

Best time and how long to stay

Morning light on the islet is from the east; late afternoon is softer and the beaches are less crowded. Two or three hours is plenty for the viewpoint, the beach and a walk through Miločer park; many people continue to Pržno for lunch and book the taxi back from there. For the return, book in the app when you are ready rather than at a fixed time, unless you have a dinner reservation in Budva.

Bus, boat or taxi

Local buses along the coast road stop above Sveti Stefan and are the cheap option, though they fill in summer and leave you on the main road. Excursion boats from Budva marina circle the islet without landing. A rental car means fighting for the viewpoint lay-by. A taxi drops you where you want, goes, and comes back when you call it.

Return trip

Sveti Stefan to Budva

Set the pickup to the viewpoint lay-by, the beach car park, Miločer or the hotel forecourt and be there when the app shows the car close; the lay-by is small and a driver cannot wait. The road back to Budva is the same coast road; in the summer evening the Budva end slows down, so book a little earlier if you have a table waiting.

  • Pickup at the viewpoint, the beach car park or a hotel
  • Book when ready, not a fixed time
  • Allow for the Budva end in the evening
