Kotor cruise port by taxi

Ships berth or tender right in front of the Old Town's Sea Gate, which makes Kotor the easiest cruise stop in the Adriatic to walk and the hardest to leave by car without a plan. This page explains where a MonteGO driver meets you outside the port, what a private shore excursion looks like, and how to be back on board with margin.

How do I get a taxi from Kotor cruise port?

Walk out of the port gate onto the waterfront road, open the MonteGO app and set the pickup to Kotor cruise port or the Sea Gate. A licensed driver accepts, you see the car and plate, and you meet on the road outside the port where cars can stop. For a shore excursion, book the ride out and either schedule the return for a fixed time or request it in the app when you are done, with margin before all-aboard.

  • Pickup on the waterfront road outside the port, not on the pier
  • Driver, car and plate in the app; no pier negotiation
  • Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks, Lovćen and Budva as private excursions
  • Schedule the return for a fixed time before all-aboard

How to book this ride

1

Walk out of the port gate

Cars cannot enter the pier. Cross to the waterfront road by the Sea Gate; that is where every pickup happens.

2

Book with the port as pickup

Set 'Kotor cruise port' or 'Kotor Sea Gate' as the pickup and your excursion destination. The app shows the car and plate approaching.

3

Fix the return before you go

Schedule the ride back for a time that leaves margin before all-aboard, or book it in the app on the way back. Pay the driver directly.

Where the port is and where a car can stop

The cruise pier is on the waterfront directly in front of the Sea Gate; larger ships berth alongside, others anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the same quay. From the gangway to the Old Town gate is a walk of a few minutes across the port area and the road. No vehicle enters the pier itself, so a taxi pickup means the waterfront road outside the port fence, by the Sea Gate and the small park.

On a day with two or three ships in, that stretch of road is the busiest in Montenegro: coaches, taxis, tour touts and thousands of people on foot. Booking in MonteGO removes the pier negotiation entirely; you see the plate in the app and walk to the car. If the road is jammed, the driver may ask you through the chat to walk a short distance towards the bus station or the River Gate side, which is faster for everyone.

Private shore excursions by taxi

A taxi is the flexible alternative to the ship's coach tours: you leave when you want, stop where you want and come back on your own clock. These are the excursions cruise passengers most often book from Kotor, based on MonteGO rides:

  • Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Up the bay to the one-street baroque town, then the small boat to the island church. The classic half-day; Perast's waterfront is closed to cars in summer, so the driver drops you at the town entrance and collects you there.

  • Lovćen and the Njegoš mausoleum

The serpentine road above Kotor with the whole bay below, up to the mausoleum in the national park. The most spectacular drive from the port; allow a full morning and fix the return time.

  • Budva and Sveti Stefan

Over the ridge to the beach town and the islet viewpoint. Comfortable in a half day if traffic is normal; in August, leave margin.

  • Tivat and Porto Montenegro

Through the tunnel to the marina village for lunch and a walk. The shortest excursion, good for a short port call.

All-aboard: the only rule that matters

Everything about a cruise-day taxi comes back to the ship's departure. Two things help. First, schedule the return ride in the app for a fixed time when you book the outbound one, so a driver is already assigned to bring you back; write the ship's all-aboard time in the ride note and the driver plans around it. Second, remember that the last stretch back into Kotor, from the tunnel or from the bay road down to the waterfront, is the slow part on a ship day. Being dropped at the River Gate or the bus station and walking the last few minutes is often faster than fighting to the port gate.

Ship time and local time are not always the same; check the ship's clock, not your phone, when you set the return.

Tender days and short port calls

When your ship anchors and tenders in, the queue for the boats back can be long in the late afternoon. Book the return ride earlier than you think you need, and use the extra time at a café by the Sea Gate rather than at the tender queue. For a short port call, a Tivat or Perast excursion fits comfortably; Lovćen and Budva want a full-day stop.

When you do not need a taxi at all

Honest note: the Old Town is on foot from the pier, and the fortress climb starts inside the walls. If your plan is Kotor itself, you need no car. A taxi earns its place when you want to see the bay beyond the walls, or when you are staying on after the ship and heading to Tivat Airport, Budva or a hotel in Dobrota with luggage, which is a normal ride booked the same way.
