3 steps

How to book this ride

1

Land, connect, open MonteGO

Airport Wi-Fi or an eSIM is enough. Set the pickup to Tivat Airport (TIV) and type your Kotor address or hotel, or simply choose Kotor Old Town.

2

Confirm and walk to arrivals pickup

A nearby licensed driver accepts within moments. The app shows the car, colour and plate, so you know who you are looking for as you exit the terminal.

3

Ride the bay road and pay the driver

The car takes the tunnel road into the bay and drops you where Kotor traffic allows. You pay the driver directly, cash or card, and the receipt stays in the app.

Where the pickup is at Tivat Airport

Tivat is a small airport, which works in your favour. There is one terminal, one arrivals exit, and the taxi pickup is right outside it. When you confirm a MonteGO ride with Tivat Airport as the pickup, the driver heads to the arrivals side and the app tells you the car, its colour and the plate number. You do not have to find a specific bay or a person holding a sign; you look for the car the app describes.

Two practical notes. First, the terminal Wi-Fi is enough to book, but it is faster to have data working before you land: install the app at home, log in, and if you use an eSIM activate it on the plane. Second, if your flight is early or late, the airport pickup area is quiet and the driver may already be waiting; the app's chat translates instantly, so a quick 'I'm at the exit' in your own language is all it takes.

What the road from Tivat Airport to Kotor is like

The airport sits on the Tivat side of the Vrmac ridge; Kotor sits on the other side, at the head of the inner bay. The direct road goes through the Vrmac tunnel, which is why this is one of the shortest airport rides in the country: you leave the airport, pass the outskirts of Tivat, enter the tunnel, and come out above Kotor with the bay opening up in front of you. In good conditions it feels like a short hop rather than a transfer.

The alternative, in summer or when the tunnel is busy, is the old road over the Vrmac ridge or the longer coastal loop through Lepetane and along the water. Drivers choose based on live traffic; the winding coastal route is slower but spectacular, and some visitors ask for it on purpose on the way back when there is no flight to catch.

In July and August the last stretch into Kotor can crawl. The bay road narrows to one lane each way, cruise ships unload at the port, and the Old Town's parking fills by mid-morning. Your driver will know the day's situation better than any map app; if you have a hotel on the Dobrota or Muo side of the bay, mention it when you book so the drop-off avoids the town-centre knot altogether.

Where a taxi can drop you in Kotor

Kotor's walled Old Town has no cars inside. Every taxi stops at one of the gates, and which gate matters more than most people expect. Based on MonteGO rides, these are the drop-off points travellers actually use:

  • Sea Gate (Main Gate)

The front door of the Old Town, facing the port and the cruise pier. Closest to the main square, the cathedral and most Old Town apartments. It is also the busiest spot on cruise days, so expect a short walk from where the car can safely stop.

  • River Gate (North Gate)

The quiet entrance by the Škurda river, next to the old market. Best for apartments in the northern half of the Old Town and for anyone arriving at a time when the main gate is jammed.

  • Gurdić Gate (South Gate)

By the small bridge at the southern tip, near the start of the fortress climb. Handy for guesthouses on the south side and for the Škaljari road.

  • Kotor bus station

A frequent drop-off for travellers connecting onward to Budva, Herceg Novi or Dubrovnik by coach. It is a short walk from the Old Town along the main road.

  • Dobrota and Muo

The residential shore on both sides of the town, where a large share of Kotor's apartments and guesthouses actually are. Taxis drop you at the door; mention the street or the house name and the driver finds it.

  • Škaljari and Kavač

The neighbourhoods on the slopes above the town and at the tunnel exit, full of family apartments and lodges. Coming from the airport these are often reached before Kotor itself.

Luggage, families and late arrivals

A standard MonteGO car takes two large suitcases and hand luggage comfortably. For a family with more, or a group of five or more, choose the larger vehicle option when you book so the right car comes; there is no need to split into two taxis for a ride this short.

Child seats are not standard in Montenegrin taxis. If you travel with a small child, write it in the ride note when you book; drivers who carry a seat will pick up the request, and the chat lets you confirm before the car leaves.

Late flights are normal in summer, with charters landing well past midnight. MonteGO drivers work the airport around the clock, and a ride to Kotor at two in the morning is a routine request rather than a special one. If you prefer certainty, schedule the pickup in the app for your landing time when you book your flight; the driver sees your request in advance and you land with a car already assigned.

If it is a cruise day in Kotor

On days when one or more ships are in port, the road from the tunnel down to the Old Town and along the waterfront gets very slow from late morning. It changes nothing about the airport pickup, but it does change where you want to be dropped. Ask for the River Gate rather than the Sea Gate, or for your street in Dobrota, and the driver will come in from the quieter side. If you are heading straight to the Perast boat or up the bay, say so and the driver will bypass the town.

Other ways to make the same trip

Honest comparison, because a taxi is not always the answer. A local bus links Tivat and Kotor, but it leaves from the town, not the airport, so you would first need to get to the Tivat bus stop; with luggage that is rarely worth it. Pre-booked transfer companies from abroad will meet you with a sign, at a price fixed in advance, and are a fine choice if you value that ritual. Renting a car at the airport makes sense only if you plan to drive around the country; for a few days in Kotor a car is a liability, since the Old Town has no parking and the bay road has almost none in summer.

For the majority of visitors staying in or near Kotor, a licensed taxi booked in the app is the simplest option: no counter, no sign, no cash argument, and a receipt.

Return trip

Kotor to Tivat Airport: the ride back

The return works the same way in reverse, with one difference worth planning for: in Kotor your pickup point is not a terminal door but a gate or a street, and on a summer morning the driver needs to be able to stop there. Set the pickup to the gate closest to you, the bus station, or your street in Dobrota, and step out to the road when the app shows the car a minute away.

Schedule the airport ride in the app the night before, or up to ten days ahead if you like to have it settled. Give yourself extra margin on cruise days and on Saturday changeover mornings in July and August, when the bay road is at its slowest. Tivat is a small airport and check-in is quick, but the road is the part you cannot control.

  • Pickup at a gate, the bus station or your street, not inside the walls
  • Schedule the ride in the app the evening before your flight
  • Add margin on cruise days and summer Saturdays
